Beginner/Intermediate Bass

Whether you're a beginner building a foundation, or a seasoned performer looking to strengthen one, it helps to have a framework. In this workshop, we'll re-visit the whats, whys and hows of bass, including:

  • Posture: working with your body (and gravity)

  • Position: bassist role and expectations

  • Pocket: developing rhythmic confidence

  • Practice: tools, exercises, and approaches

  • Playing: figuring out 'the bass part'

Julio Appling

Growing up in Tacoma, Washington, Julio Appling explored a variety of musical instruments, settings, and styles before taking up and settling on upright bass in college at the University of Redlands. An in-demand Portland-area sideman and session player, his credits include a variety of artists including The Portland Cello Project, Never Come Down, Strange and the Familiars, The Good Time Travelers, Stephanie Schneiderman, and Scott Law. Past projects have included the genre-bending, globetrotting Student Loan String Band and exploratory jazz group Trio Flux.

A passionate, and enthusiastic educator, Julio earned his M.M. in Music History from Bowling Green State University and has instructed courses, lessons, and workshops at the college and community levels. He encourages students to prioritize fun while building a personalized, productive, and sustainable relationship with music.
