Advanced Old-Time Fiddle
Tune Roadtrip: Come join me as we travel via tales, tunes and techniques I learned first-hand from several legendary, older-generation southern fiddlers I was fortunate to visit over the last 25 years. We’ll learn music from Art Stamper, Clyde Davenport, Paul David Smith, and J.P. Fraley from (Kentucky), Melvin Wine & Lester McCumbers from West Virginia, Benton Flippen from Round Peak, North Carolina and Violet Hensley from Arkansas (who is still a musical inspiration at 109!). We’ll cover bowing, ornaments, a couple alternate tunings and discuss regional styles. The class will also be tailored to address questions in class including how to get an authentic old-time fiddle sound. Repertoire will be taught by ear in class but music/chord handouts are provided to take home. Please bring your phone or other device to record.
