Beginner/Intermediate Clawhammer

In this class we’ll focus on the fundamentals of developing a good practice routine what and how to practice. We’ll discuss how to control tone, volume and speed to command a good rhythmic right hand, which is the basis and magic of great clawhammer playing. We’ll also focus on left hand techniques that make up the hallmark sounds of clawhammer banjo playing. This class is all about building a strong musical and banjoistic foundation that will help guide you as you become a more capable and creative player.


Brian Alley

Brian Alley is a 3-finger and clawhammer banjoist from Oregon by way of Colorado, born and raised near Denver. As a kid, Brian cut his teeth picking at the nearby Telluride and RockyGrass festivals, while also exploring his instrument’s deep Appalachian roots. Traveling to Eastern Virginia every summer (where his family history runs deep), Brian’s been able to meet, learn from and play with some of the banjo greats from around the world. He aspires to someday grow up to become a banjo great himself, while truly hoping to never grow up.
