Advanced Old Time Fiddle with Billy Hurt

In this Advanced Old Time Fiddle workshop we will go over bowing techniques using specific songs as teaching examples. We'll be learning by ear and discussing each example. I’ll be teaching in the style that I play a lot of, strongly influenced by Clark Kessinger and other West Virginia Fiddlers. My style comes from the 1950's and further back.

I was raised around Music from birth, my dad was friends with Clark Kessinger, so Clark has always been an inspiration and influence on my playing! I also have the same birthday! I Love old time music as well as ragtime, blues, older jazz, Western swing, old country, and many different Fiddlers from these genres! I have played with several bands including Jim Eanes, David Parmley, Karl Shiflett, and currently my own band Five Mile Mountain Road!

‘Billy is what you might be tempted to call a throwback – somebody who would be more comfortable living in an earlier time. The music he loves best comes from the 1930s-1970s, and he plays it with a clarity and precision quite rare in contemporary bluegrass. It’s not that he eschews modern technology – he has a cell phone and a computer – just that he works in an artistic milieu whose time has come and gone.’ Bluegrass Today
